The Virginia Community College System, comprised of 23 community colleges, located on 40 campuses around the state, provides academic, occupational and technical training programs, many of which are designed specifically to meet the needs of nearby businesses and industries.
In the 2015-2016 academic year, Virginia's community colleges awarded over 33,400 degrees, diplomas and certificates. Increasingly, community colleges are developing transfer agreements with four-year institutions, whereby students earn the first two years of a bachelor’s degree at a community college. In 2013, the community colleges served over 13,000 employers and nearly 224,000 individuals in credit courses and over 66,000 individuals in customized workforce training and continuing education courses, contributing substantially to the economic development of their service regions.
