Virginia has the highest percentage of technology workers in the country and ranked 5th in total high technology employment as reported in Cyberstates 2009.
The American Electronics Association’s definition of technology includes both manufacturing and services industries, but clearly the services side dominates high technology employment in Virginia, with almost half of high technology employment accounted for by Computer Systems Design & Related Services.
The economic output of Virginia’s high technology industry is $58 billion. High technology also supports $41 billion in additional economic output in Virginia.

- Seventy Virginia public and private institutions offer programs in information technology and related fields. These schools are well dispersed throughout the state with a heavier concentration in Northern Virginia, Richmond and the Hampton Roads regions.
- According to the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, more than 15,500 students were enrolled in information technology programs and over 3,300 degrees and certificates were rewarded in the 2007-2008 academic year.
